Several months ago, we had the pleasure of meeting Thandi Tutu who is the CEO for the TuTu Desk Project in South Africa. This project was started by Bishop TuTu to meet the crisis of ninety million children in Sub Saharan who are without school desks. He decided to do something about it and has set a goal of raising money to provide for twenty million desks He has had a small very light weight desk created that can be carried to and from school each day. This allows the children to have a desk at home while doing their homework and to have a school desk as well. As you might know, many of the children are sitting on the floor or ground when doing homework and school work.
These desks are very reasonably priced at $20.00 per desk and the Absalom Jones Center for Racial Healing and All Saints Episcopal Church in Atlanta have joined together to raise funds to buy a few desks. The enclosed flyer indicates the names of the schools and the number of desks that we are hoping to buy in Phase I of the initiative. Our ultimate hope is that this campaign will gain great strength in our Diocese and that we can purchase many more desks in the future. We will be providing physical desk to each of you so that your parishioners can see how they look and how the children use them. Please begin to think of ways to mobilize them to help in this worthy effort.
Though there are many ways to approach this, we would like to ask you to begin a campaign to help us purchase 1307 desks. If all of our parishes will participate, each one only has to raise enough money for twelve desks. Thank you so much for your time and energy and for all of the help that you will give to this worthy cause.
Peace always, Catherine Meeks and Rev. Tim Black
